How to Right Yourself in a Topsy-turvy World

Updated: Feb 17

I strive to bring light into the world and align myself with the monks and Aloka, who are dedicated to walking for peace, in peace, and embodying peace. Recently, i've been struggling with Vertigo.

One morning I flipped over with fervor as I always wake up with a gusto - to wish Doug a good morning and suddenly I found wads of blankets grasped tightly in the palms of my hands as I braced myself for what I thought was going to be a hard landing in the doorway of our bedroom.

I blinked once more and, to my astonishment, realized I was still in bed while he gazed at me in confusion.

If you find yourself wincing at the retelling of this vertigo episode, then this week's blog is perfect for you.

Or, do you have no idea what I'm talking about? Lucky you! Vertigo is no joke and this would be helpful info so that hopefully you'll never know!

Vertigo is a symptom — not a disease, characterized by a sudden, false sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving. Often caused by inner ear issues, it creates intense dizziness and balance problems, frequently accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sweating. It is commonly triggered by head movement, with episodes lasting from seconds to days.

Let's begin with what to do if you

already have it. To be honest,

both times I experienced it, I attempted the online remedies that involve moving your head in various directions, but they didn't work. However, I found relief by visiting Dr. Moira Fitzpatrick at the Healing Roots Center for Transformation in Encinitas.

The first time required only one visit. I thought it was behind me and wasn't so cautious going forward.

The next time, I thought for sure I could cure myself. Picture me in our RV on my hands and knees in table top position, as I lifted my head and said to Doug, "I've got this."

I held my phone in one hand, prepared to follow the YouTube tutorial I had selected. With enthusiasm, I began to swing my head around in our RV. Being the overachiever I am, I was determined to excel and move past this. Doug watched from the dinette with a mix of wonder and slight apprehension.

The next thing I remember, I gradually spread out my limbs in all directions: North, South, East, and West. I probably resembled a pancake on the floor and felt as if I had just gotten off a fair ride that ended poorly. Then, I raised my head and modestly requested a bowl.

On that occasion, it required two visits from Dr. Moira. Despite this, I was extremely thankful for the relief and have since developed a healthy fear of vertigo, along with deep sympathy for anyone who has experienced it. I'm pleased to report that it's been a long time since I've dealt with it.

If you find yourself experiencing vertigo, here are the most effective essential oils for managing the symptoms:

  • Ginger oil: Long used as a remedy for nausea and motion sickness, it can help settle the stomach and reduce dizziness.

  • Peppermint oil: Its invigorating properties and menthol content can help improve blood flow, relieve headaches, and alleviate nausea and vomiting.

  • Lavender oil: Known for its calming effects, it is particularly helpful for vertigo triggered or worsened by stress and anxiety.

  • Lemon oil: The bright, zesty aroma can ease nausea and provide a refreshing, clarifying effect during an episode.

  • Frankincense oil: Offers grounding properties that may help calm the nervous system and promote a sense of balance and stability.

How about trying to avoid it entirely? I've adopted a two-part approach. First, I no longer turn my head quickly, whether to say good morning or at any other time during the day, as rapidly switching from one side to the other appears to be a major factor.

Another practice, that not only do I swear by but at least two of my customers do as well, is applying Helichrysum behind your ears. I have a roller bottle in with my yoga mat and it's the first thing I do when I roll out my mat and sit down with my oils.

When I'm not on my mat, I apply Helichrysum behind my ears and on other pulse points if I'm experiencing dizziness.

Helichrysum essential oil, known as the "everlasting flower," primarily promotes skin health by reducing wrinkles, blemishes, and signs of aging.

It offers rejuvenating, restorative, and soothing properties for a youthful complexion, while also helping to reduce skin redness, improve circulation, and soothe tension when applied topically. It is commonly used to soothe skin after shaving or as part of a daily facial routine.

Key benefits of doTERRA Helichrysum oil include:

  • Skin Rejuvenation: It helps diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and blemishes, promoting a youthful, glowing complexion.

  • Skin Soothing & Healing: Known for its restorative properties, it is effective in reducing the appearance of skin imperfections, such as scars or bruises.

  • Circulation Support: It can help with reducing the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins.

  • Emotional & Mental Balance: The herbaceous, honey-sweet aroma helps soothe feelings of mental fatigue and can be used to re-center oneself.

  • Anti-aging Properties: It is a frequent ingredient in skincare for its ability to promote healthy-looking skin.

Usage Recommendations:

  • Topical Application: Apply directly to the skin to reduce blemishes or wrinkles, or mix with a carrier oil (like dōTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil) for sensitive skin.

  • doTERRA Touch® Helichrysum: A convenient, pre-diluted roller for easy, on-the-go application.

  • Aromatherapy: Diffuse to uplift the environment and promote a soothing atmosphere.

Here's to keeping all of our systems running smoothly so that we can continue being light in the world.

In Gratitude, Shari
