We Know How To Party

Have you really lived until you've been to a Savannah Banana Baseball game?
I had no idea what was in store for us when Haley invited us along with a dozen of her baseball loving friends and family to the game. Think Harlem Globetrotters meet the Padres.
Our initial task was to dash to the local thrift store to find some banana yellow outfits.
Upon arriving at Petco Park, we merged into a crowd of yellow. It was my first experience of total neutrality at Petco Park. The usual contrast between our home team colors and those of the visitors had disappeared. It was all about unity and being part of something larger. I was already loving it.
Watching the baseball game was incredibly entertaining as the players made their impressive athletic feats seem like child's play. They caught balls behind their backs, performed flips and cartwheels during the plays, caught bananas in their oversized sweatpants from three tiers up in the stadium, and even had a pitcher who delivered pitches while on stilts, yes stilts!
It was continuous fun, packed with music, games, and audience interactions. There wasn't a single boring moment, or should I say "dole"? Moments like these, coming together for some good old-fashioned fun, bring me immense joy. I'm proud of Haley's generosity and grateful for the joy we share.
As I celebrate my 37th year sobriety, I reflect back over the years and ponder. I began this journey as a 22 year old, new bride who tried to mask my insecurities and discomfort with a nervous, almost non-stop giggle and lots of vim and vigor for life. Even though I was petrified at this new life that I was embarking on, I felt that if I lived life like a party - no one would see beneath my surface.
I had a lot of growing up to do and I needed to learn an entirely new design for living. Going into this new lifestyle, I believed I needed to add something, learn how to be a certain way - and all of this belief was rooted in being something more, something beyond myself by building and adding to my already existence in a way that could really razzle dazzle others.
Fortunately, over time, through working the steps and therapy, I realized that I was already enough. It wasn't about adding more layers to who I was; rather, it was about removing the layers I had built up for protection and seeking approval, so I could discover my true self.
As I grew older, I immersed myself in yoga, and its philosophy supported this belief. They refer to these layers as Koshas. These layers accumulate throughout our time on earth, stemming from both positive and negative interactions, as well as from merely existing. Our journey is straightforward: we must learn to discard these layers that we mistakenly thought were essential for our survival and simply Be.
Mic drop.
How straightforward! Life was essentially one big improv show rather than a three-act play with lines to remember. Fortunately, this journey has brought me to my true self, and I've grown to like myself and feel content.
These were statements that I could not earnestly say in early sobriety... I am enough, I do enough (most days I feel that, still working on that one) and there is enough.
With all of this said, I feel like my ability to party is at a new found high, pun intended. It's not about the outer layers that I wear, the surrounding backdrop of the event, the who's who of the guest list - it's simply feeling free from bondage, that inner monkey mind that used to keep me feeling separate from others.

Life remains like a party for me, as I still possess a good deal of energy and enthusiasm for living. However, this now stems from a sense of gratitude for everything I've learned and applied to my daily life. After all, how could young
Shari Ness at 22 let you see me when I hadn't yet begun to see myself?
